Netflix Spotlight: What/If Starring Renee Zellwegger

Posted by

What/If dropped Friday, May 24th on Netflix!

From Revenge creator Mike Kelley, the new soapy drama stars Renee Zellwegger (Cold Mountain) and Jane Levy (Suburgatory). As far as intriguing premises go, this one surely hit the mark. Per Netflix, What/If is a neo-noir social thriller that explores the “ripple effects of what happens when acceptable people start doing unacceptable things.” The first season centers “on a mysterious woman’s lucrative, but dubious offer to a cash-strapped pair of San Francisco newlyweds.”

As early as now, the 10-episode series is already getting quite the buzz. However, the reviews that are coming in are leaning towards the negative. Entertainment Weekly even called it “terrible.”

The thing is, this show seems to know it’s a mess. Soap opera is a genre that rewards excess — from oversized shoulder pads to gargantuan leaps of logic — and Kelley, along with director Phillip Noyce, presents everything to the viewer with a cheery, exaggerated wink.

If you’re someone who loved ABC’s Revenge, you might wanna check this out. Otherwise, just skip it if erotic thrillers is not your jam.

What/If also stars Blake Jenner (American Animals, Glee), Samantha Ware (Glee), Keith Powers (Famous in Love), Daniella Pineda (Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom), Juan Castano (Shades of Blue), John Clarence Stewart (Marvel’s Luke Cage) & Dave Annable (Brothers & Sisters).
